OCTARVIA-web is a program for estimating the life cycle fuel consumption of a main engine, an index for fuel consumption.

Outline

OCTARVIA-web is a program for estimating the life cycle fuel consumption of a main engine, an index for fuel consumption. OCTARVIA-web has the following three modes a main engine, an index for fuel consumption.

  • • Index mode:For estimating the life cycle fuel consumption of the main engine
  • • Prediction mode:For simulating ship operation under arbitrary weather conditions such as ship speed and fuel consumption based on the prediction of ship performance in actual seas and the calculation of external forces due to winds and waves with accuracy
  • • Simulation for fouling and aging effect mode:For estimating the power increase rate of the main engine due to fouling and aging

Interface

The OCTARVIA-web interface shown below allows data input-output to and from OCTARVIA-web. Input-output data can be imported and exported between OCTARVIA-web and SALVIA-OCT.-web and EAGLE-OCT.-web, two other programs developed in the above-mentioned project.

OCTARVIA-web Estimation Process

Standard Operating Model

In Index mode, OCTARVIA-web estimates the life cycle fuel consumption of a ship’s main engine under conditions provided by the standard operating model, which sets the frequency distribution of the weather conditions for the evaluation, changes in resistance, propeller open water efficiency and specific fuel consumption by aging and fouling, loading condition (inbound/outbound), and ship speed (inbound/outbound). Long-term statistical data of the weather conditions in the sea areas along representative routes are used for setting the frequency distribution of the weather conditions.

(1) Estimation of External Forces

OCTARVIA-web evaluates the external forces on a ship caused by waves and winds by physical calculation based on ship geometry data, including cross-section and superstructure data. The results of estimation of the ship geometry parameters in EAGLE-OCT.-web may be used as input data. The results of the estimation of the external forces can be exported to SALVIA-OCT.-web for disturbance correction.

(2) Evaluation of Ship Performance in Actual Seas

OCTARVIA-web estimates the power curve of the main engine of the ship in actual seas from the results of the external force estimation and the ship performance in still water estimated from the results of analysis of the tank test data or onboard monitoring data. Then, it estimates the speed of the ship and the revolution, power and fuel consumption of the main engine in light of the operating conditions. In Index mode, OCTARVIA-web estimates ship performance under specific weather conditions selected for the evaluation. In Prediction mode, it estimates ship performance under arbitrary weather conditions.

The ship performance in still water estimated by SALVIA-OCT.-web may be imported into OCTARVIA-web as input data for this estimation.

(3) Evaluation of Life Cycle Fuel Consumption of Main Engine

OCTARVIA-web estimates the time-course changes in the fuel consumption of the main engine from the results of the estimation of ship performance in actual seas and standard operating model, and then calculates the life cycle fuel consumption of the main engine, or cumulative fuel consumption in the evaluation period.

For estimating the life cycle fuel consumption of the main engine

※Simulation for Fouling and Aging Effect Mode

Parameters expressing aging and fouling (rate of increase in hull resistance, rate of deterioration in propeller open water efficiency, and degree of recovery by cleaning) are entered for each cleaning interval, and the change from the baseline performance in still water is evaluated as the rate of increase in main engine power at the designated ship speed.
